Electricity and making it dead

A talk on isolation, damaged cables and not working live.

This is a DRAFT for a competent person to review before anyone uses it in a talk. It is not legal advice and it does not make a workplace compliant.

What happened

A damaged plug, a wet hand on a switch, a machine that is 'only' being cleaned while it is still plugged in. People trust that someone else has isolated it.

Why it matters

Electric shock and a machine that starts while someone is in it are both capable of killing. 'It will only take a second' is how the guard comes off.

What we do differently

If a cable, plug or casing is damaged, it is out of use and labelled, not taped up for later. Clean and clear a machine only when it is isolated and you have proved it is dead, the way this site has been shown. Nobody works live. If you do not know how to isolate it, you do not start.

Discussion

  1. Which machine on this site is awkward to isolate, so people do not?
  2. What do we do with a damaged extension lead today, not next week?
  3. Who is allowed to remove a lock or a tag, and when?

SafeMonday helps a workplace keep a record of near-miss reports, toolbox talks and who attended. That record can support evidence of instruction and consultation. It does not, by itself, make a workplace compliant with the health and safety law that applies where you operate.
