Manual handling: the lift we do without thinking
A short talk on lifting, team lifts and the loads people move by hand.
This is a DRAFT for a competent person to review before anyone uses it in a talk. It is not legal advice and it does not make a workplace compliant.
What happened
Sacks, trays, boxes and kegs get moved by hand because it is quicker than fetching the truck. Someone twists while they lift. Someone carries a load they cannot see over.
Why it matters
Back and shoulder injuries often come from the ordinary lift, repeated, not from one heroic effort. They take people off work for weeks and they are miserable.
What we do differently
Plan the lift: where is it going, is the route clear, do you need a second person or a truck? Keep the load close, feet stable, and do not twist. If it is above the weight you are happy to own, get help. Split the load rather than proving a point.
Discussion
- Which regular lift on this site should always be a two-person job?
- Where is the truck or the trolley, and why do people not fetch it?
- What do you say when someone tells you they are fine to lift it alone?
SafeMonday helps a workplace keep a record of near-miss reports, toolbox talks and who attended. That record can support evidence of instruction and consultation. It does not, by itself, make a workplace compliant with the health and safety law that applies where you operate.
