Vehicles and people in the same place
A talk on keeping pedestrians and moving vehicles apart on a small site.
This is a DRAFT for a competent person to review before anyone uses it in a talk. It is not legal advice and it does not make a workplace compliant.
What happened
On a small site the same doorway is used by people on foot and by pallet trucks, vans or forklifts. Someone steps out, someone reverses, and both assume the other has seen them.
Why it matters
A person always loses to a vehicle. Reversing and doorways are where it happens, not on a long straight road. High-vis and a horn do not help if the route itself is shared without a rule.
What we do differently
Use the pedestrian door and the marked walkway. Stop and look before you come through a plastic curtain or a yard door. Drivers sound the horn at the blind spot we have agreed, and they wait. Visitors are walked in. Nobody rides on a truck or a tug.
Discussion
- Which doorway on this site is the one a driver cannot see through?
- What do we do when a delivery driver wants to reverse without a banksman?
- Where should a visitor stand while they wait?
SafeMonday helps a workplace keep a record of near-miss reports, toolbox talks and who attended. That record can support evidence of instruction and consultation. It does not, by itself, make a workplace compliant with the health and safety law that applies where you operate.
